Spousal Sponsorship for Permanent Residence

Spousal Sponsorship for Permanent Residence

The Spousal Sponsorship Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse or partner for permanent residence in Canada. This immigration pathway helps families reunite and build their lives together in Canada.

Through this program, eligible sponsors can bring their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to Canada and support them in becoming permanent residents. Every year, Canada welcomes thousands of families through this family reunification initiative.

Sponsors must demonstrate that they are able to financially support their partner and ensure that their basic needs are met during the sponsorship period.

Eligibility Criteria for Sponsors

To sponsor your spouse or partner for permanent residence, you must meet the following conditions.

Age Requirement

The sponsor must be at least 18 years old.

Immigration Status

You must be one of the following:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • A permanent resident of Canada

Residence Requirement

Sponsors must be living in Canada. Canadian citizens living abroad may also sponsor their spouse if they plan to return to Canada once the application is approved.

Financial Stability

Sponsors must be able to support themselves, their partner, and any dependent children without relying on social assistance, except in cases of disability benefits.

Financial Responsibility

Sponsors must demonstrate that they can provide financial support to their partner and ensure their basic living needs are met.

Sponsorship Responsibilities

When sponsoring a spouse or partner, the sponsor must sign an undertaking agreement with the Canadian government. This agreement confirms the sponsor’s responsibility to financially support the sponsored person.

The support provided may include:

  • Housing and accommodation
  • Food and daily living expenses
  • Clothing and personal items
  • Utility costs
  • Health care expenses not covered by public insurance

The sponsorship undertaking generally remains valid for three years from the date the sponsored partner becomes a permanent resident. Once the agreement is approved, it cannot be cancelled.

Financial Requirements

There is no strict minimum income requirement for sponsoring a spouse or partner. However, sponsors must show that they have sufficient financial resources to support their partner.

Individuals may not qualify to sponsor if they are:

  • Receiving social assistance (other than disability benefits)

Currently in bankruptcy and unable to meet financial obligations

Required Documents

Applicants applying for spousal sponsorship may be required to submit the following documents:

  • Valid passports for both sponsor and applicant
  • Proof of relationship (marriage certificate or supporting documents)
  • Identity documents
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Medical examination results
  • Proof of financial support

Additional documents requested by immigration authorities

Important Note

Spousal sponsorship applications must clearly demonstrate that the relationship is genuine and not entered into solely for immigration purposes. Immigration authorities carefully review applications to verify the authenticity of the relationship before granting permanent residence.
