Starting a new life in Canada begins with choosing the right immigration pathway. For many skilled workers, Express Entry is one of the fastest routes to permanent residence.
However, creating an Express Entry profile requires careful attention to detail. Even a small mistake during the profile stage can lead to complications later in the process. The Express Entry system manages several economic immigration programs and ranks candidates based on their qualifications, skills, and work experience.
Express Entry Programs
Express Entry is not a single program. It manages multiple immigration pathways depending on an applicant’s background and qualifications.
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
This program is designed for skilled professionals with foreign work experience who wish to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
This pathway is intended for individuals with experience in skilled trades occupations, such as construction, electrical work, or mechanical trades.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The CEC program is for individuals who have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Candidates may also receive a nomination through a province under the Provincial Nominee Program, which can significantly increase their chances of receiving an invitation.
Targeted Invitation Rounds
In recent years, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has also introduced category-based invitation rounds. These draws prioritize candidates with experience in high-demand sectors such as:
- Healthcare AND SOCIAL SERVICES
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
- Education
- French-language proficiency
Additionally, applicants must have an eligible occupation under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. Eligible occupations generally fall within TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.
How the Express Entry System Works
Once a profile is submitted to the Express Entry pool, candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Points are awarded based on several factors, including:
- Age
- Education level
- Work experience
- Language proficiency in English or French
- Adaptability factors such as family ties in Canada
During regular invitation rounds, the highest-ranked candidates are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
From Invitation to Application
After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), candidates must submit a complete application for permanent residence within the required timeframe. Immigration officers carefully review the documents and information provided to ensure accuracy and eligibility.
