Canadian Experience Class

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is an immigration program designed for individuals who have already gained skilled work experience in Canada and wish to become permanent residents. It is particularly beneficial for temporary foreign workers and international graduates who have built valuable experience while living and working in Canada.

This program recognizes the contributions of individuals who are already familiar with the Canadian work environment and society, providing them with an opportunity to transition from temporary status to permanent residency.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements can create an Express Entry profile and may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence if their profile ranks competitively.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Canadian Experience Class, applicants must meet the following requirements.

Canadian Work Experience

Applicants must have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years before applying. This experience must be full-time or an equivalent amount of part-time work.

Legal Work Authorization

The work experience must have been obtained legally while authorized to work in Canada.

Language Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English or French by completing an approved language test and achieving the required score based on their occupation.

Understanding Skilled Work Experience

To qualify under the Canadian Experience Class, work experience must meet specific conditions.

  • The work must be paid employment, including wages or commissions.
  • Volunteer work or unpaid internships are not considered valid work experience.
  • Part-time work is acceptable as long as the total hours equal at least 1,560 hours, which is equivalent to one year of full-time work.
  • Applicants may combine multiple part-time jobs to reach the required hours.

Eligible work experience must fall under skilled occupations categorized in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.

These include:

  • Managerial occupations (TEER 0)
  • Professional occupations (TEER 1)
  • Technical occupations and skilled trades (TEER 2 or TEER 3)

Applicants may include experience from one or multiple eligible occupations, provided the correct NOC code is used.

Language Requirements

Language proficiency is an important requirement for the Canadian Experience Class.

Applicants must achieve minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels based on their occupation category:

  • CLB 7 for occupations in TEER 0 or TEER 1
  • CLB 5 for occupations in TEER 2 or TEER 3

Applicants must take an approved language test that evaluates their ability in:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking

Language test results are valid for two years and must still be valid on the date the permanent residence application is submitted.

Education

Although education is not a mandatory requirement for the Canadian Experience Class, having educational credentials can improve an applicant’s Express Entry ranking score.

Applicants who completed their education outside Canada may choose to obtain an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to confirm that their qualifications are equivalent to Canadian standards.

Application Process

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Applicants must confirm that they meet the required work experience, language proficiency, and other eligibility criteria.

Step 2: Create an Express Entry Profile

Eligible candidates must create an Express Entry profile and provide information about their Canadian work experience, language test results, education, and personal details.

Step 3: Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Candidates in the Express Entry pool are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Those with competitive scores may receive an Invitation to Apply during regular immigration draws.

Step 4: Submit Permanent Residence Application

After receiving an ITA, applicants must submit their permanent residence application along with the required supporting documents and application fees.

Step 5: Application Assessment

Immigration authorities review the application to verify eligibility and documentation. If approved, the applicant will receive confirmation of permanent residence.

Important Notes

The Canadian Experience Class is a competitive program within Canada’s Express Entry system. Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements allows candidates to enter the Express Entry pool, but receiving an invitation to apply depends on the applicant’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score compared with other candidates.
