Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Program
The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Program is one of the main immigration pathways for skilled professionals who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. This program is part of Canada’s Express Entry system and is designed to attract individuals with strong work experience, education, and language skills who can contribute to the Canadian economy.
The Federal Skilled Worker Program evaluates candidates using a points-based system that considers several factors such as age, education, work experience, language ability, and adaptability.
To qualify, applicants must score at least 67 points out of 100 on the eligibility assessment. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements can create an Express Entry profile, where they will be ranked against other applicants. Those with competitive scores may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.
Work Experience
Applicants must have at least one year of continuous full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in a skilled occupation within the past 10 years. The occupation must fall under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.
Language Proficiency
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English or French by completing an approved language test. These results help determine the applicant’s ability to communicate effectively in the Canadian workplace.
Education
If an applicant completed their education outside Canada, they must obtain an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). This assessment verifies that the foreign education is equivalent to Canadian educational standards.
Admissibility
Applicants must be admissible to Canada. This means they must not pose a security risk, have serious criminal convictions, or have medical conditions that could make them inadmissible.

Application Process
Step 1: Create an Express Entry Profile
Eligible applicants must create an Express Entry profile and submit detailed information regarding their education, work experience, language test results, and other relevant details.
Step 2: Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Candidates with competitive scores in the Express Entry pool may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during immigration draws conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Step 3: Submit Supporting Documents
After receiving an ITA, applicants must submit all required documents, including police certificates, medical exam results, and proof of funds, along with the required application fees.
Step 4: Application Assessment
Immigration authorities review the submitted application to confirm that all requirements are met and that the provided information is accurate.
Step 5: Confirmation of Permanent Residence
If the application is approved, the applicant will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), allowing them to move to Canada and begin their new life as a permanent resident.
Important Note
The Federal Skilled Worker Program is part of Canada’s Express Entry immigration system, and selection is competitive. Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an invitation to apply. Applicants with higher scores in the ranking system have better chances of receiving an invitation during Express Entry draws.
